RFID for click-and-collect and ship-from-store: store stock you can sell online
An online order is only as good as the store's stock record. If the record says yes and the shelf says no, the order is cancelled.

The problem
Where store fulfilment breaks down
Orders go to the wrong store
The order system picks a store that looks stocked on paper. The item isn't there, so the order is split, rerouted or cancelled.
Safety buffers hide stock
Fashion stores carry many sizes in small quantities. Holding back even one item per size can take much of the range off the website.
Staff can't find the item
Online orders land during opening hours. Without search, staff walk the floor and the stockroom while customers wait at the till.
In the store isn't the same as sellable
Reserved, on display, damaged or in a fitting room: a count includes these, an online order can't use them.
Parcels go missing between sites
Store-to-store transfers and returns to the warehouse get sent but not declared, and stock drifts at both ends.
Stock sits in the wrong store
One store sells out while another holds the same item that will end the season at a markdown.
How Retail Reload handles it
Stores that work like mini warehouses
Same jacket, five items in one store
| Where it is | Sell online? |
|---|---|
| Sales floor, rail 4 | Yes |
| Stockroom, shelf B | Yes |
| Reserved for a customer | No |
| In a fitting room | Not yet |
| On a mannequin | No |
A count says 5. Only 2 can go online.
Order preparation
Hot/cold search leads staff straight to the item.
Parcel control
Transfers and returns are tracked. Errors are corrected automatically.
Routing
Orders a store can't fill move to another store. Slow sellers ship first.
“The set of APIs from Retail Reload allow each of our IS to be fed from a 100% reliable source of the RFID inventory updated in real-time. A key asset, especially for omnichannel availability.”David HerrenschmidtCIO, Etam Group
Before you start
Five steps before store stock goes online
Measure accuracy
Count one store, recount a week later.
Define sellable
Decide which statuses can go online.
Check your OMS
It needs item-level stock by API.
Set the fallback
Reroute, warehouse or cancel?
Record a baseline
Cancellations and prep time, before the pilot.
What is omnichannel inventory management?
Managing one stock across stores, warehouses and the website, so an order can be filled from wherever the item is. It only works if each store's stock record is accurate at item level.
What is a good inventory accuracy rate?
For selling store stock online, as close to 100% as you can get. At Etam Group, store inventory accuracy went from 77.75% before RFID to 99.75% with Retail Reload.
Why are click-and-collect orders cancelled?
Usually because the stock record says an item is in the store when it isn't: sold, misplaced, damaged or never received. The order is accepted, then can't be filled.
How does RFID help ship-from-store?
Each item gets a status and a location. Orders only go to stores that really have the item, and staff find it quickly to prepare the parcel.
How fast can a click-and-collect order be ready?
Retail Reload publishes an example of online orders made available in under 15 minutes from store stock.
Can we stop holding safety stock?
Step by step. Measure accuracy in a pilot store first. Once store stock is reliable, buffers can come down store by store.
